As well as his personal experiences, He will outline the history of the country’s peoples and the increasing repression under Nationalist governments to get a unique perspective of life under Apartheid. To enrol in this fascinating course, look for 23HIS04 which starts on 8th February.

There is still some availability for the following programs:
  • Poetry-Art Poetry (starting on Thursday this week)This will commence with the greatest poem of the 20th Century “Ekphrasis” and will look at how poetry inspires painters, then how art inspires poets. The word ekphrasis, or ecphrasis, comes from the Greek for the written description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical or literary exercise, often used in the adjectival form ekphrastic. It is a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined. Come along to be inspired by joining course 23LIT04.
  • Words out Loud (public speaking)This program commences in April and will be a light-hearted and fun approach to building up confidence and mastering strategies for speaking in public, whether speaking at a meeting or at a family occasion. From Monday 20th February all courses originally scheduled at the Red Brick Hall, will be held at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute (KMI). There is car parking in Simpson Street or Baynton Street, but none directly outside the Mechanics Institute. The good news is that the KMI has better access to the building with improved kitchen and bathroom facilities.
There will be no Friday@U3A next Friday – 17th February – this is the day of upheaval when U3A Kyneton moves into the Kyneton Mechanics Institute for the duration of the RBH renovations. The following Friday – 24th February – the KMI is not available so the next Friday@U3A will be Friday 3rd March.
New members, previous members and tutors are invited to attend a special WELCOME to U3A afternoon tea, activities to delight and to settle into the KMI on 3rd March at 2.00pm. Our membership has recently reached 300, enabling U3A Kyneton to grow and flourish within the Macedon Ranges community.
Coffee Club and Board & Card Games: Angie’s Café is NOW OPEN The address is 61-79 Mollison Street, Kyneton.  Coffee Club and Board & Card Games will now be held at Angie’s new location.Due to the move, our Film Club will be postponed for 16th February.

The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie: U3A Kyneton are extremely grateful that the Macedon Ranges Shire Council has provided funds for a bus so that members can attend this production in Melbourne. The Comedy Theatre is the venue with the bus departing on Kyneton on 5th March at 4pm from the Information Centre, and dropping us as close as possible to the theatre, and collecting us at the end of the show to return home.  No driving or finding car parks for us! The Mousetrap is a murder mystery play by Agatha Christie. It opened in London’s West End in 1952 and ran continuously until 16 March 2020 with more than 10 million patrons over that time. The play began life as a short radio play written by Agatha Christie as a birthday present for Queen Mary, the consort of King George V. It was broadcast on 30 May 1947 under the name Three Blind Mice. The story drew from the real-life case of Dennis O’Neill, who died after he and his brother Terence suffered extreme abuse while in the foster care of a Shropshire farmer and his wife in 1945. The play’s storyline is set at “the present”, which presumably means England as it was around the time when the play came out in 1952, including postwar continuation of World War II rationing. There are still tickets available for this play UNTIL TONIGHT but no further enrolments will be possible from Tuesday 14th February.  We hope you can join us. Search for course 23EXC02 to enrol. The U3A Kyneton Choir has grown wonderfully from 12 members in 2022 to 24 in 2023. Choir Director Adam announced nothing makes him happier than a room full of choristers and we certainly have that!
As Adam will be away for the next two scheduled rehearsals, there will be no Choir next Thursday 16th February or on 23rd February. The next rehearsal will be Thursday 2nd March and a revised schedule will be distributed. Men’s Kitchen commenced last Wednesday with a Vietnamese theme – marinated pork ribs and a special green sauce. The sauce was very green with many ingredients, including condensed milk and was magical. Desert was Peach Melba and although Robert couldn’t explain how this fitted the theme, we all agreed the Vietnamese would have loved it anyway.
Last Friday there was a full house for Barry Golding’s presentation on the early days of colonisation in Victoria and its impact upon the Dja Dja Wurrung – the first nations people in central Victoria. Barry shared his journey of exploration when, growing up in Donald, he was intrigued by the traces left by the aboriginal inhabitants. This led to a lifelong interest and a deep understanding of our regions first peoples and their way of life. A way of life totally destroyed by colonisation. Our thanks go to Barry for an absorbing and informative talk. On 17th February Barry will lead a field excursion to the former Franklinford Aboriginal Protectorate. There are a few spaces still available to enrol into Course 23EXC03 – cost $10.
Name tags: We are encouraging members to wear their name tags for courses (whenever appropriate) as this helps everyone to get to know and introduce each other.  Name tags have been distributed to members this week during class sessions. Please contact Roni to arrange a suitable time to collect yours if you don’t have one.
Last week our Photography group visited Lake Sanitorium – credit and thanks go to Jennie Francis for sharing this unique photo in a beautiful setting

WOTZON 20th February 2023

Dear Members,

U3A Kyneton on the move – into the Kyneton Mechanics’ Institute!
From Monday 20th February all courses previously held in the Red Brick Hall have been transferred to the Kyneton Mechanics’ Institute (KMI).
We shall be using the KMI main hall on the same basis as the RBH. Courses already timetabled into the KMI Room 5 (e.g. Choir, Apartheid, and Book Circle) will remain there. The entrance to the KMI is via the double glass doors adjacent to the bowling club entrance – past the Kyneton Library. All U3A equipment and furniture have been moved into the KMI and are in two locations:
  • The Green Room – this is the long room behind the stage, which the double glass doors open into. The steel cupboards containing AV, table tennis, tea makings etc have been placed there.
  • Room 4 – this is a storeroom at the Mollison Street end of the hall – at the back of the main hall, on the right as you enter from the Green Room. The large screen TV monitor, stand and speakers and the table tennis tables are stored there.

The Green Room provides access to the main hall through the first door on the left as you enter – via a short passageway. The second door on the left (past the stage stairs) is the door into Room 5. If your course is located in Room 5, enter it through the Green Room door as the main hall will be occupied by another activity. The door at the far end of Room 5 opens into a foyer, with access to the toilets on the far side. At the end of the Green Room is the KMI commercial kitchen. There is also a small kitchenette on the left as you enter. We have the use of both and both have instant boiling water dispensers. Access with care! There are bound to be a few settling-in issues and your U3A Committee members are on standby hand to help overcome these. Let’s make the most of our new temporary home.

Friday@U3A
There will be NO Friday@U3A this week (24th February) because the KMI is not available.

The excursion to Golden Dragon Museum, Bendigo is on Friday 17th March. The bus will be leaving Kyneton Information Centre at 9am and return by approximately 3pm.
The Golden Dragon Museum provides a living history of the Chinese people of Bendigo from the goldrush of the 1850’s to the present day. Central to the permanent display is Sun Loong, the longest imperial dragon in the world. The Museum also features one of the finest collections of Chinese processional regalia in the world, and several hundred Chinese coins, some dating back to 221 BC. There will be a guided tour of the museum and time for a stroll around the Yi Yuan Gardens and Guan Yin Temple. Lunch can be booked at the adjoining Chinese Restaurant, at your own cost, or you may like to bring a picnic to enjoy in the Gardens. If you are interested in joining this tour, please enrol quickly so bookings can be confirmed. The $9 fee covers entry to the Museum, Gardens and Temple. U3A Kyneton thanks the Macedon Ranges Shire Council for the grant which pays for the bus. Enrolment into these and other courses  can be made via the U3A Kyneton membership U-MAS system.

Shirley Proctor, U3A Kyneton’s most intrepid traveller, entertained us in March 2021 with a presentation about her bicycle tour following the caminos in Spain. Next Friday she is taking us to Colombia with the topic “Shirley in Colombia”. We shall travel along the Magdalena River, past the volcano that killed 25,000  people in 1985 and find out what happened to drug lord Pablo Escobar’s pet hippopotamuses. Come to the KMI at 2.00pm on Friday – this is a regular U3A Kyneton free afternoon session and there’s no need to register. Be there for the adventure of a lifetime.

U3A KYNETON CHOIR
Begin the Beguine and other songs from the forties and fifties are in the choir’s growing repertoire. There are 25 choristers but only four men. While there is nothing more thrilling than a soprano, we need balance.
So, if you are male and at a loose end on Thursdays between 10.00am and 12.00 noon, come along with your baritone, your tenor, even your soprano.
MEN’S KITCHEN

There was a menu mystery at last week’s Men’s Kitchen. Robert had advised that Tarragon Mouse would be prepared. It turned out to be Tarragon Mousse, which infused into the marinated and poached chicken breasts, accompanied by new potatoes and organic green beans, made a delicious main course. Dessert was Robert’s grandmother’s rhubarb cake – which was to die for. The next Men’s Kitchen is on 12 April and Robert is temporarily stepping down as chef de cuisine. Will he cope as sous chef? Member Russell Sinclair is stepping in with a menu of dishes from his Northern Italian heritage or, is it Northern Scotland? It could be haggis – another Men’s Kitchen menu mystery.
WALKING FOOTBALL(Indoor soccer has started!)
We are now constantly improving our skills after three weeks of training! Football Victoria have been coaching everyone, along with Gerry from Whittlesea U3A, for three weeks now and the advance in the understanding of the game is something to behold!
We now know the positions on the field, how to kick properly, how to NOT run on the court, ball handling skills and passing and following the basic rules. We can even understand a bit about the psychology of the game. This has been in a very enjoyable and fun-filled social environment of supportive and friendly people. If you are interested in playing, please come along for a 2 pm start on Wednesday for an hour of fun and exercise in the Kyneton Mechanics Institute.

WOTZON 20th March 2023

COVID VACCINATION UPDATE:
In line with ATAGI recommendations and Victorian Government regulations U3A Kyneton is no longer enforcing Covid vaccination as a condition to membership or attendance at courses. COVID-19 remains a serious, issue with February 2023 data showing “22,177 cases of COVID-19 reported across Australia, an average of 3,168 cases per day.” It should be noted that the case number trend is at present ‘downwards’. The virus is still very much around, and a fifth vaccination booster is being recommended for seniors. Those with special needs should consult their physician. As 2022 came to an end, the statistics provide evidence that the ‘virus’ remains very active in our community. The U3A demographic dictates that we must be alert to the risks – specifically to those with existing medical conditions – and take care to reduce those risks as much as possible.“ATAGI recommends a 2023 COVID-19 vaccine booster dose for [those identified] if their last COVID-19 vaccine dose or confirmed infection (whichever is the most recent) was 6 months ago or longer, and regardless of the number of prior doses received,” The Link to ATAGI website is here: ATAGI updates COVID-19 booster advice for 2023 – COTA Victoria

23HIS01 Australian Submarine History – Backwards
There have been many changes since this course was proposed in September last year. We have been waiting for last week’s Government’s announcement on Australia’s defence and the AUKUS trilateral security pact.
The course, starting on 26th April at 2.00pm, will now be turned around, to commence with the AUKUS decision and then to work backwards with the history of submarines.  The first two sessions will try and unpack the AUKUS deal.  This is quite complex and has many aspects. It will be presented by John Taubman, a former submariner in the Royal Australian Navy and Christopher Snedden, a former academic and politico-strategic analyst, both of whom also have worked with United States Defence forces. Together, we will try and explain the ramifications and possible outcomes both from Australia’s position and the overall world’s perspective. In addition, we will try and explain how a nuclear reactor works:  it is quite simple really – it is just a steam kettle – until you put it into a submarine!

FRIDAY@U3A, 24th March
The next Friday@U3A presentation will be by Fred Gammie with the topic “Global Food Security in 2023 and Beyond”. In 2022 Fred gave us a prescient talk about Ukraine and Russia. Next Friday he will be drawing upon his consultancy experiences in commodity trading, particularly with the food and food processing industries. He will examine the three main influences – climate change, politics and big business and make some predictions about the future.Shall we have enough food to keep us fed and fat? Come along and find out. Last Friday at U3A, David Kram gave us a tour, not only of Wagner’s Ring Cycle but a history of European music from the 17th century – explaining those influences which shaped the Ring. David is forwarding his notes and Powerpoint presentation, which will soon be available via our website. He will be conducting Melbourne Opera’s Ring Cycle – Cycle Three, in Bendigo on 21, 23, 28 and 30 April.
